Matthew Tate Gallery Showing

"A Year at the Armory"

Artist Statements:
I see each painting as a world of it's own.  they all live for me as an indelible life experience, each one building upon the next.  I paint because it is what constitutes my being person.  I love the challenge and the surprise and then marvel at the existence of something new in the world.  I love the materials that lock themselves in a moment of time to reflect the movements of my mind and body.  The materials also inspire those actions as well as the concepts and ideas the art speaks about.  This is the truth of the materials, that they be their own hidden force.  You might say we know each other pretty well, but they know me better!  The subject of the work is the result of my consideration of life and what the paint can.  Then the horizon line brings my imagination to life.

Art making, as it seems to me,
is really only extraordinary dreams
in a place where paths lead to
half forgotten treasures, that are
the pleasure in memories who triumph
over time, and for them
I live a different world
that's not completely mine.

And so I paint like in tomorrow
there's no guarantee, and then sleep
with the sparrows, hearing all night
those quick hearts for I could have done
many different things, but this has
chosen me in spite of years in effort
to think and feel in other ways.
